The Rigid grinder at 8 lbs. is a lot lighter than my other 7" grinders that weigh 12 lbs. or more and the Rigid grinder works equally well. There is no lag when starting it up and the switch control makes for fast starts and stops as needed when grinding.
A small design feature that is nice is the LED on the grinders power cord. If it is lit you know you have power to the tool and if not you know where to start looking to fix the problem.
What is missing is a protective guard that truly protects the operator so it is important to wear gloves and use a full face shield with this tool. This is especially important when using a wire brush as metal pieces are often flung out at very high velocity, though even with grinding discs pieces can break off and do a lot of serious damage to the operator. I have only seen the extra full guard on a few Craftsman right angle grinders and it is a nice accessory to have when using a wire brush at high RPMs.
Lots of power is provided by the Rigid grinder and we have even used it with the Blue Boar dry cutting diamond core bits to quickly bore holes up to 6" in diameter through concrete cinder block and brick walls. Although the grinder could in theory be used as a sander but this entails removal of the guard from the tool and the addition of a rubber backing disc like the excellent ones from Porter-Cable.
This is a sturdy support for my 8" bench grinder. It is sturdy enough in use that I don't have to bolt it to the floor, which is good, because in my shop it has to be moved occasionally. If you need to attach third party sharpening jigs, a piece of 3/4 plywood can be attached to the base first and used for jig attachment.
